Hyundai Motor India Rides Growing Demand with Focus on CNG Vehicles.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) is intensifying its focus on CNG vehicles, driven by rising demand across both urban and rural markets. According to Tarun Garg, HMIL’s Whole-time Director and COO, the company is capitalizing on India’s expanding CNG infrastructure, which currently includes over 7,000 stations and is projected to grow to 17,500 by 2030.

The automaker currently offers CNG options in three models—Grand i10 NIOS, AURA, and EXTER. Contribution from CNG variants has grown significantly, rising from 9.1% of domestic sales in FY22 to 11.4% in FY24. In the first seven months of FY25 (April–October), CNG models accounted for 12.8% of Hyundai’s domestic sales, totaling 3.54 lakh units across fuel types.

To meet growing demand, Hyundai introduced the 'Hy-CNG Duo' technology in its EXTER and Grand i10 NIOS models. The dual-cylinder system offers increased boot space, improved fuel efficiency, and seamless switching between petrol and CNG via an integrated ECU. These innovations helped the company achieve a record-high CNG penetration of 14.9% in October 2024.

October sales alone saw 8,261 CNG units sold, with model-wise penetration reaching 17.4% for the Grand i10 NIOS, 39.7% for the EXTER, and 90.6% for the AURA. CNG adoption has grown in urban markets from 8.8% in FY22 to 10.7% in FY24, while rural penetration rose from 7.1% to 12.0% during the same period.

Top-performing markets include Pune, New Delhi, and Ahmedabad, with Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh leading in state-wise sales.

Hyundai joins competitors like Maruti Suzuki India and Tata Motors in expanding CNG portfolios. Maruti targets 6 lakh CNG vehicle sales in FY25, up from 4.89 lakh in FY24. Meanwhile, Tata Motors has seen CNG penetration in its passenger vehicle segment grow to 21% in FY25, compared to 16% in FY24.

With continued innovations and a growing market, Hyundai is positioning itself as a key player in India’s CNG vehicle segment.
