India's First Urban Ropeway in Varanasi to Be Ready by August 2024
India's first urban ropeway in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is set to be completed by August 2024. This innovative project aims to reduce travel time while offering an aerial view of the historic city.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the ropeway on March 24, 2022. It is part of the 'Pravatmala Pariyojana' National Ropeways Development Programme.

Cost and Latest Update Phase 1 of the ropeway, projected to cost Rs 645 crore, is expected to be completed by 2025. The project is making significant progress in implementing the initial phases of public transportation.
Routes The 3.7-kilometer ropeway will cover five key locations: Girja Ghar Godowlia Chowk, Rath Yatra, Kashi Vidyapith (Bharatmala Mandir), Varanasi Railway Station, and Varanasi Cantonment.
Travel Time and Features The ropeway will reduce travel time from Varanasi Junction to Godowlia to just 16 minutes. Approximately 150 gondolas, each with a capacity of ten passengers, will serve up to 6,000 passengers per hour. Gondolas will arrive every two to three minutes at each of the four stations, ensuring a smooth and efficient commuting experience.
