KBR Secures Engineering Design Contract for West Qurna-1 Gas Capture Project in Iraq

US-based engineering company KBR has announced a contract award from AKT Oil Services Company to undertake detailed engineering design for the West Qurna-1 Low-Pressure Gas Capture Project in southern Iraq.

The project forms part of Basrah Gas Company's (BGC) multibillion-dollar programme to expand gas recovery infrastructure, reduce routine flaring and strengthen domestic energy supplies.

Under the contract, KBR will provide multidisciplinary detailed engineering services for Gas Compressor Station 6 at the West Qurna-1 oil field, which holds more than 20 billion barrels of recoverable oil reserves.

AKT Oil Services is executing the project under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract awarded by BGC in July 2026.

The facility will capture low-pressure associated gas currently flared during oil production and channel it into Iraq's domestic energy system.

The project supports Iraq's broader strategy to monetise associated gas, improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and strengthen national energy security. The contract value and completion schedule remain undisclosed.
