Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Project Nears Completion with Latest Tunnel Breakthrough.

The Khurda Road-Balangir New Rail Line Project reached a significant milestone with the successful breakthrough of the 2.6-km-long tunnel between Buguda and Banigochha in Odisha's Nayagarh district, as announced by the East Coast Railway. The breakthrough, or "daylighting," was achieved on Monday and marks the completion of Tunnel T-3, which is the longest tunnel in Nayagarh district and the second longest in the entire project.

This tunnel was excavated using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) and features a challenging 2-degree curve. Advanced technologies and machinery were used to navigate the rugged terrain of the Eastern Ghats, facilitating progress in the face of difficult conditions.

The breakthrough will enhance connectivity between the eastern and western parts of Odisha, significantly improving the region’s transportation network and economic growth prospects.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed the achievement, calling it "a milestone showcasing engineering excellence in challenging terrains."

The 301-km rail project, which includes seven tunnels along a 75-km stretch between Daspalla and Purunakatak, has faced some of its most complex challenges in constructing tunnels through the Eastern Ghats. The longest tunnel (T-7), spanning 4.85 km, has already been completed.

As of now, 215 km of the rail line has been finished, with 105.8 km completed between Khurda Road and Daspalla, and 109 km between Balangir and Purunakatak. Work is progressing on the remaining sections, with completion expected in the coming months.

Once completed, the project will drastically reduce travel time between Bhubaneswar and Balangir, enhancing regional connectivity and supporting local economies.
