Maersk and Cochin Shipyard Sign MoU to Explore Ship Repairs and Shipbuilding Activities.

AP Moller - Maersk (Maersk) and Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaborative opportunities in ship repair, maintenance, and shipbuilding activities in India.

This partnership aligns with the Indian government’s Vision 2047 maritime objectives and recent announcements in the Union Budget 2025-26 aiming to position India among the world’s top five maritime hubs, according to a company press release.

Under the MoU, Maersk will use its global fleet expertise to strengthen CSL’s capabilities, particularly in the areas of container ship maintenance, repair, and dry-docking operations. The collaboration is set to begin with the first Maersk vessel repair at CSL planned for 2025, marking the start of what the companies envision as a long-term partnership.

Leonardo Sonzio, Head of Fleet Management & Technology at AP Moller – Maersk, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating that it would enable Maersk and CSL to capture a larger share of the global ship repair and building market.

The MoU will cover several key areas, including:

  • Technical expertise sharing to meet global standards in ship maintenance.

  • Exploration of ship repair, dry docking, and new building opportunities.

  • Joint training programs focusing on responsible practices and skill development initiatives for CSL employees and Maersk seafarers.

The partnership is expected to significantly boost India’s maritime sector, contributing to the development of world-class ship repair and building capabilities within the country. Initially, the collaboration will focus on vessels up to 7,000 TEU for afloat repairs and up to 4,000 TEU for dry-docking, with plans to expand these capabilities in the future.
