Maharashtra Govt okays Adani Group’s Dharavi project.

The Maharashtra State Government has approved the acquisition of 256 acres of salt-pan land in north-east Mumbai, providing a significant boost to the Adani Group’s ambitious Dharavi redevelopment project. The land, acquired from the Central Government, will be leased to Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd, which is overseeing the rehabilitation of the 620-acre slum, one of Asia’s largest, located in the heart of Mumbai.

According to the state’s Cabinet release on September 30, 2024, the land will be utilized to build low-cost and affordable housing for Dharavi residents who will be relocated from the densely populated area. A detailed survey is underway to assess the current residents and businesses to determine who will be rehoused within Dharavi and who may be relocated elsewhere.

However, the project has met with opposition. Some Dharavi residents have voiced concerns about the redevelopment and the ongoing survey, while Maharashtra’s largest opposition party has vowed to cancel the agreement with the Adani Group if they win the upcoming state elections.
