Maruti Suzuki Plans ₹450 Crore Investment in Renewable Energy Solutions by FY25.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) announced on Wednesday an investment of ₹450 crore to enhance the use of renewable energy solutions over the next three years, starting from the financial year 2024-25.

The company has initiated a pilot biogas plant at its Manesar facility in Haryana, utilizing in-house food waste and napier grass, MSIL stated. This effort aligns with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s ‘Waste to Energy’ programme. To date, MSIL has invested ₹120.8 crore in renewable energy initiatives, including solar power and biogas.

The pilot biogas plant is designed to produce 0.2 tonnes of biogas daily, equivalent to around one lakh standard cubic metres during FY 2024-25, offsetting approximately 190 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Additionally, MSIL expanded its solar capacity to 43.2 MW in FY24 and plans to add 15 MW to its Manesar plant and 20 MW to the upcoming Kharkhoda plant over the next two years.

MSIL highlighted that the biogas plant will provide energy for its Manesar facility's manufacturing processes, with the residual organic manure being used in horticulture, creating a zero-discharge model.

“Energy is one of the critical inputs in the manufacturing process. As we ramp up our production capacity from around two million to four million by 2030-31, we are also accelerating our efforts to increase the share of sustainable and renewable energy sources across our operations. This is in line with Suzuki’s Environment Vision 2050 and the Government of India’s renewable energy focus,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, MSIL.

The learnings from this pilot will be applied to MSIL’s forthcoming world-class manufacturing facilities, Takeuchi added.
