Mattress maker Spring Air plans Rs. 100-crore expansion.

As more consumers drive up the demand for quality bedding solutions, the US-based mattress maker Spring Air Bedding said it is scaling up its presence in India through capacity and retail expansion. It plans to invest Rs. 100 crore for its expansions.

The company, which recently set up its fourth manufacturing facility in West Bengal, said the aim was to cut on the logistics costs. It has three other facilities in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru. 'There is huge demand for quality products. We set up the plant to cut on the logistics time from the factory to the retail point. Our combined manufacturing capacity stands at 12,000 mattress per month,' Ashok Sharma, CEO and Director, Spring Air Mattress, Indian sub-continent, told BusinessLine.

The US-based entity entered India in 2010 through a licensing deal. It has 40 mono-brand stores and is available through 25,000 multi-brand retailers.

'We are in the process of scaling up our retail presence add another 100 stores and reach out to one lakh multi-brand retailers in the next two years. This will entail an investment of Rs. 100 crore,' Sharma said.

Speaking on the market, Sharma said that mattress market was dominated by few brands on the lower end of the segment or the unorganised category. 'Unlike in the West, India is a market where non-standardised sizes account for bulk of sales. Currently, about 50 per cent of sales come from non-standardised or customised products,' he said.

Sharma said Spring Air has reported a turnover of Rs. 100 crore for March 2014. Asked if the company was looking at e-commerce category, he said Spring Air has signed up with few online players such as Snapdeal and Amazon.
