Megha Engineering begins work on stalled Polavaram irrigation project.

Construction conglomerate Megha Engineering and Infrastructures (Meil) recently announced commencement of work in the stalled Polavaram large irrigation project in Andhra Pradesh, a day after the high court vacated stay orders issued earlier.

The Rs. 50,000-crore, multipurpose Polavaram large irrigation project is being funded by the Centre as a national project. Meil said in a statement that it will complete the project on a fast-track mode by planning and pooling resources for the ?4,358 crore contract awarded to it, which includes the hydel power project.

“The company wants to begin the main reservoir work and the hydropower station work simultaneously,” said Meil, adding that it has already begun the survey, mobilisation of resources, engineering staff and machines.

The Hyderabad-headquartered conglomerate promises to complete the Polavaram multipurpose project within the stipulated time of two years to irrigate 7.2 lakh acres and produce 960 MW of hydropower, apart from supplying 23.44 TMC of drinking water to Visakhapatnam.
