Modern cargo handling facilities at Beypore port.
The new cargo handling facilities, introduced as part of the ongoing Coastal Shipping Promotion Programmes of the Union and State governments, will be commissioned at the Beypore port soon.
Minister for Ports and Fisheries K. Babu will inaugurate the facilities, which include a modern reach stacker to handle inter-modal cargo containers and a powerful 750 Brake Horse Power tug, MT Malabar , to help easy toeing of cargo vessels in the port. Elamaram Karim, MLA, will chair the function.
Officials attached to the Department of Ports said that along with the tug, a new crane imported from Germany too would be added to the improved cargo handling facilities at the port shortly. The government has invested around Rs.17 crore for this 200-tonne capacity equipment. It will reach the port in two months, they said.
According to the officials, MT Malabar will be an advantage for the Beypore port to attract larger cargo vessels.
'It will have the support of a 15-member dedicated crew. Without this facility, we would not be able to tow big vessels to the port and facilitate easy cargo unloading,' they pointed out.
Along with the strengthening of cargo handling facilities, steps to get the land identified for the expansion of the port too would be expedited.
Port Officer Ashwini Prathap said recommendation to take over the already identified land after completing the formal acquisition procedures had been forwarded to the government.
