MRPL Commissions New Bitumen Production Unit.

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has successfully commissioned a new ‘Bitumen production train’ powered by ‘Biturox’ technology from Austria’s Pörner. The newly inaugurated unit, with an annual production capacity of 150,000 tonnes, doubles MRPL’s existing bitumen production capability.

Bitumen, a key material in the construction of India’s vast highway network, plays a vital role in the country’s infrastructure development. Despite its importance, India has traditionally relied on imports to meet the growing demand for bitumen.

In response to this gap, MRPL began expanding its bitumen production capacity in 2022. The new plant, designed and engineered by Engineers India Limited (EIL), is capable of consistently producing high-quality VG40 bitumen, with flexibility to manufacture VG30 and other grades as required.

BHV Prasad, Executive Director (Projects) of MRPL, emphasized the significance of the new unit, stating, “With the launch of this new Bitumen production train, MRPL is poised to play a pivotal role in the region’s infrastructure growth. Our advanced technology and commitment to quality ensure that our customers receive the highest-grade bitumen, supporting the construction of durable and sustainable road networks.”

MRPL’s new facility represents a significant step towards enhancing India's self-sufficiency in bitumen production, contributing to the nation’s infrastructure development with world-class technology and products.
