Mumbai Coastal Road Phase 2 Inaugurated by CM Shinde: 5 Key Points on 8-Minute Travel Time Reduction
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the second phase of the Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road on Monday, connecting Worli and Marine Drive. Here are the key points:
Significant Time Reduction: Once fully operational, the coastal road will cut down travel time between Worli and Marine Drive from 40-50 minutes to just 8 minutes.
Phase 2 Details: The second phase, the northbound carriageway from Marine Drive to Haji Ali, will be open for traffic starting June 11. This section includes a 6.25 km tunnel from Haji Ali to Amarsons.
Operational Hours: Similar to the south-bound arm, which opened in March, the north-bound arm will be operational between 7 am and 11 pm on weekdays.
Construction and Costs: The Mumbai Coastal Road, spanning 10.58 km, is being constructed by the BMC with an expenditure of ₹13,984 crore so far. The project aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion between south Mumbai and the western suburbs, cutting commute time by over 70% and fuel consumption by 34%.
Future Plans: CM Shinde stated that the entire coastal road project will be completed by July 2024. The road features a 4+4 lane layout with key interchanges at Amarsons Garden, Haji Ali, and Worli Seaface to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
