NH widening opposed.

Land owners who surrendered land to widen Edapally-Moothakunnam NH 17 corridor into a 30-metre-wide stretch three decades ago have decided to staunchly oppose the impending eviction to widen the corridor to 45-metres.

This was decided at a meeting of NH 17 Samyukta Samara Samity held on Sunday at Edapally.

Land owners sought measures to build a six-lane NH on the 30-metre-wide portion that they surrendered, but is lying idle for the past many years, despite phenomenal increase in traffic.

A lane on the NH requires just 3.5 metre width and all that a six-lane NH needs is a 21-metre wide carriageway.

The balance nine metres can be used to build drains, footpaths, medians etc., said district chairman of the samity Hashim Chendampilly in a pressnote.
