OpenAI Confirms New Delhi as Location for First India Office.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, confirmed on Friday that it will open its first office in India later this year, located in New Delhi. The announcement comes as new data highlights the country's rapid and significant adoption of its AI tools.

India has emerged as ChatGPT's second-largest market by user base, trailing only the United States. The company reported a more than fourfold increase in weekly active users in India over the past year, making it one of the company's fastest-growing markets. Additionally, India ranks among the top five countries globally for developers on the OpenAI platform and has the largest population of students using ChatGPT.

Sam Altman, OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer, underscored the strategic importance of the Indian market. “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission,” he said.

Altman added that establishing a local office and team is a crucial step in the company's commitment to making advanced AI more accessible across the country and to building “AI for India, and with India.”
