The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a set of proposals to extend the city’s metro network into its peripheral areas, aiming to strengthen mass transit connectivity beyond the core urban zone.
In its general body meeting, corporators cleared a proposed new metro corridor from Khadakwasla to Donaje, which is expected to improve access for visitors travelling to Sinhagad Fort and surrounding areas. Another key approval was for a metro line from Katraj to Khed Shivapur, which is expected to link the transit system with the proposed outer ring road and support future suburban expansion.
The civic body also approved additional extensions, including a Katraj–Undri corridor and a Wagholi–Lonikand route, aimed at connecting rapidly developing residential and industrial clusters on the city’s outskirts.
All the approved proposals will now be forwarded to Maha Metro for preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs), which will determine feasibility, alignment and cost estimates.
Corporators said the expansion is necessary to prepare for rising urban mobility demand, noting that two metro routes are already operational in the city’s core areas. They emphasised that future expansion must integrate the city centre with emerging growth corridors.
PMC standing committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale said the civic body would extend full support to accelerate metro implementation. “We are conducting joint meetings with Metro officials and district authorities to fast-track the metro network,” he said
An official from Maha Metro said Phase-II expansion already includes major corridors such as Khadakwasla–Hadapsar–Kharadi and Nal Stop–Warje. “Whatever new proposals PMC and PCMC will hand over to us, Maha Metro will begin studies in phases,” the official said.
