Revival of Buri Teesta irrigation project still in problems.

Buri Teesta irrigation project in Nilphamari district beset with multiple problems is hampering its proper functioning.

The pioneer irrigation project of the northern region in Buri Tessta river, a tributary of main river Teesta in Jaldhaka upazila in Nilphamari district envisaged to irrigate 11000 hectares of land in its initial stage, but this year the project provides irrigation facilities to only 1000 hectares of land.

The project was undertaken by the then WAPDA in 1960. At that time a total of 121 hectares of land was acquired in the Union Parishads of Chiravija Golna and Kharija Golna of Jaldhaka upazila. In the year 1962 a total of 12 gates were built along with six regulators, 12 siphons and so on.

Besides canals were also built on such union Parishads as Dharmopal UP, Mirgonj UP, Shimulbari UP, Khutamara UP, Balagram UP, Kymari UP and so on. There is a project office at Kaliganj near the project area where infrastructures including quarters of the staff and employees and office buildings also remain. But at present there is no employee to look after the project.

Sources said the river Buri Tieesta which is ecologically dead needs to be excavated.
