Second entry to railway station to be ready next year.

The second entry to the Kollam railway station from the National Highway 208 will be commissioned next year.

This was decided at a meeting between N.K. Premechandran, MP, and Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Bajpai in Thiruvananthapuram recently. Mr. Premachandran said an allocation of Rs.7.65 crore had been made in this year’s Railway Budget for the project. At present, the entry to the station is from the National Highway 47. The second entry project would comprise a foot overbridge linking both the National Highways and all platforms of the station.

The second entry point will have ticket booking counters and a large parking area.

Mr. Bajpai said the Railway Board had given sanction for the Rs.2.5-crore road underpass project at the Perinad station level-crossing. Construction work on the project would start soon. Mr. Bajpai said the petitions submitted by Mr. Premachandran for a new passenger train on the Thiruvananthapuram- Kollam route, extension of the Chennai- Thiruvananthapuram Ananthpuri Express to Kollam and MEMU service on all days from Kollam are under the consideration of the Railway Board.

Work on raising the height of platforms at Paravur, Mayyanad, Eravipuram, and Perinad stations was progressing.
