Semiconductor Manufacturing Units Begin Commercial Chip Production: MeitY Secretary.
India’s newly established semiconductor manufacturing units have begun producing commercial chips, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push to build a robust domestic electronics and manufacturing ecosystem, a senior government official said recently.
S Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said India’s semiconductor programme is progressing steadily and is close to being fully committed under its first phase.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the AI India Conclave-2025 organised by FICCI, Krishnan said that ten semiconductor projects have already been grounded, with another two or three proposals expected to receive approval soon.
“Once these are approved, India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 1.0 will be fully committed. All the 10 units that have been set up will manufacture commercial chips. Production of commercial chips has already started,” he said.
The commencement of commercial production is seen as a key step in reducing India’s dependence on semiconductor imports and strengthening its position in the global electronics supply chain.
