Smart City CEO Reports Completion of 20 Infrastructure Projects with 15 More in Progress

Sanjit Rodrigues, CEO of Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd (IPSCDL), revealed that a total of Rs. 935.90 crore was sanctioned under the Smart Cities Mission for 35 projects. Out of these, 20 projects have been successfully completed, with Rs 404.20 crore spent, while 15 projects are currently in progress, estimated to cost Rs. 531.70 crore.

In response to public dissatisfaction, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant intervened, setting a May 31 deadline for the completion of all Smart City Mission works in Panaji.

Rodrigues, addressing reporters, announced that ongoing sewerage works on two major road stretches in Panaji—Dr Atmaram Borkar Road and Dr Dada Vaidya Road—are expected to be completed by January 30. These works involve laying sewer lines, constructing manholes, and providing house connections.

He assured the public, "The sewerage works along Dr Atmaram Borkar and Dr Dada Vaidya roads will be completed by January end, and this is my commitment to you. I am hopeful of meeting the May 31 deadline set by the government for completion of all ongoing projects in the city."

Of the total 19.89 km, 14.4 km of sewer lines have been laid in central Panaji, with only a 1.7 km stretch pending, which will be covered soon.

Rodrigues acknowledged that sewerage work is pending along M G Road, and this stretch will be temporarily closed for vehicular traffic during the construction. He explained, "We propose to take up M G Road after completing the work on 18th June Road. It’s a major work, the sewage from east and west of the city enters the main trunk line beneath the M G Road and it flows up to the main STP. We have increased the pace of the work to meet the deadline, and we are aware that this is causing inconvenience to the people."

Highlighting practical challenges faced during manhole construction, Rodrigues mentioned encountering water just below one meter and the need to excavate more than 8 meters below ground level at some stretches, causing delays.

Rodrigues pointed out that major works and expenditures typically occur between January and May, while work is impeded between May and December due to the monsoon and events in Panaji. He emphasized that significant development was witnessed between October 2023 and December 2023, and the momentum is expected to continue in the months ahead.
