Telangana steps up efforts to augment power.

The Telangana Government recently said all out efforts are now underway to bridge the demand supply gap in the power sector and the growing demand would be met by additional purchases and fresh capacity addition.

It hinted at allocating Rs. 1,000 crore to TS Genco in the budget to be announced for next financial year (2015-16).

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, a detailed review meeting was held today wherein Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said the State has worked out medium and long term plans to ensure it becomes a power surplus State within three years.

By 2018, Rao said the State should achieve a generation capacity of 21,350 MW in the thermal sector and with hydel power the total installed capacity would be about 24,000 MW.

However, as against the current requirement of 6,000 MW, the available capacity is 4,300 MW and the rest is being bridged with supplies from other sources, including Central generating stations.

During the rabi crop season and the summer months, the State is likely to face demand-supply gap and this would be potentially met with additional purchases, he said.

By next year, the State would be able to procure about 1000 mw from Chhattisgarh, for which necessary arrangements have been made. The power plant of Singareni Collieries is likely to contribute about 1000 MW.

Referring to Manuguru power plant, Rao said it would be named Bhadravathi Thermal power Station. The foundation stone for the new project would be laid shortly. BHEL has been awarded contract for this project and part of the funds have already been issued.
