Three subways to be renovated soon.
Three pedestrian subways on Anna Salai will soon be given a facelift. The Highways Department has called for tenders from contractors to renovate subways near Anna Flyover (Safire theatre), Thousand Lights Mosque and Guindy. The interiors would be checked for leaks, cracks and broken steps would be repaired. These apart, lighting would be improved inside, explained a source in the Highways Department, which maintains these facilities.
“Only the usual cleaning is done on a regular basis. Renovation has not been taken up in quite sometime. The entrances to these subways too would be changed and each of them would have a different look so that they can be individually identified,” the official explained.
Earlier, the department had embarked upon an idea to have identical looking subways, which is why those near Simpsons and Head Post office on Anna Salai have similar fan-like openings on top. But this idea seems to have been shown the door, recalled a town planner. A total of ₹3.5 crore has been earmarked for the renovation of subways. “The Guindy subway is so busy and witnesses heavy footfalls. The department should ensure that it is cleaned on a regular basis,” said K. Murugan, who works in the Guindy industrial estate.
