Torrent Power Inks Long-Term LNG Supply Agreement with Japanese Partner.
Torrent Power Ltd has signed a long-term Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Japan’s largest power generation company, JERA Co., Inc., securing up to 0.27 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) over 10 years starting 2027. The move aims to ensure a stable fuel supply for the company’s power generation and city-gas distribution businesses.
The LNG will be strategically used to operate Torrent Power’s 2,730 MW combined cycle gas-based power plants (GBPPs) across India, supporting peak demand periods, balancing renewable energy supply, and meeting the country’s rising power requirements. It will also cater to the growing LNG demand of Torrent Gas Ltd (TGL), the Group’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) arm, ensuring reliable supply for households, commercial and industrial consumers, as well as CNG vehicles.
The company said it plans to leverage current softness in LNG prices to explore additional medium- and long-term LNG procurement, enhancing portfolio diversity and securing reliable energy supply for its customers.
