Versova-Bandra Sea Link on Track for 2-Year Completion, Confirms Maharashtra CM.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a series of major infrastructure and urban development projects that are set to transform the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Speaking at a press conference, the CM provided updates on key transport links and revealed plans for two new cities, dubbed "Third Mumbai" and "Fourth Mumbai."
Versova-Bandra Sea Link on Track
The CM stated that the Versova-Bandra Sea Link is currently 60% complete and is on track for completion within the next two years. An extension of the sea link, which will connect Dahisar to Bhayander, is also in progress and is expected to be finished in the next 2-3 years. This network will create a full-fledged parallel road to the Western Express Highway, which currently handles 60% of the city's traffic.
Third Mumbai: A New Economic Hub
Third Mumbai, located in the Navi Mumbai area, is being developed as a new technology and economic hub. The recently opened Atal Setu and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport are central to its development. The new city is designed to be a technology center, with a goal of hosting 60% of India's data capacity.
The government is also planning to build a world-class education city on a 300-acre campus, just 15 minutes from the new airport. This education hub will accommodate 12 of the world's highest-ranking universities, with seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) already signed. The city will share common infrastructure and is expected to house around 100,000 students.
To facilitate this massive expansion, the MMRDA will develop a new 150-square-foot town, inviting private builders to participate in a joint venture with a 76% to 24% ownership split.
Fourth Mumbai and the Northern Ring Road
Further north, the region is poised to become "Fourth Mumbai," a major economic and logistical hub with its own bullet train station. This area will be supported by the under-construction Vardhavan Port, which will become India's largest port upon completion.
A new ring road is also planned to connect Bhayander (Uttan), run via Virar, and extend to the Vardhavan Port. CM Fadnavis stated that work on this project is scheduled to begin within the next year.
