"VinFast, Vietnam's Electric Vehicle Manufacturer, Plans $2 Billion Integrated Unit in Tamil Nadu"
VinFast, Vietnam's leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has unveiled plans to establish an electric vehicle plant in Thoothukudi, southern Tamil Nadu, with a substantial investment of $2 billion. This announcement precedes the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet scheduled for Sunday and Monday in Chennai.
VinFast and the State Government are collaborating to achieve a total investment of up to $2 billion, with an initial commitment of $500 million earmarked for the first phase of the project, spanning five years from the commencement date. This strategic move signifies VinFast's significant step toward expanding its presence in the world's third-largest vehicle market, as outlined in a company press release.
Construction of the plant is expected to commence in 2024, with the project aiming to transform into an electric vehicle production hub in the region, boasting an annual capacity of up to 150,000 units, according to the release.
Beyond the economic advantages, the project aligns with sustainable development goals, particularly in the realm of green transportation. The initiative aims to target 30% of newly registered private cars to be electric, aligning with the State government's commitment to minimizing carbon emissions in the transportation sector. This move by VinFast reflects the growing importance of electric vehicles in the global automotive landscape and aligns with the broader shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
