Winning bid for world's biggest solar power plant in Abu Dhabi delayed.

An announcement on the winning bid for the world’s biggest solar power plant in Abu Dhabi has been postponed as a result of the current coronavirus outbreak, according to reports.

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Energy took the decision following strict measures outlawing large group meetings to combat the spread of Covid-19.

The 1.5 gigawatt (GW) solar power plant is in the Al Dhafra region, around 50km south of Abu Dhabi city.

The facility will cover around 20km and it is hoped to be producing power by the middle of 2022.

Officials hope it will go a long way towards helping the UAE hit its target of generating half of its energy from clean sources by 2050.

"We are also monitoring the impact of the current situation on global economies, energy prices be it oil or renewable energy sources, and the availability of imported products and equipment essential to continuing our solar and nuclear projects," said Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy.
