Work on culvert to delay link road project.
Work on a culvert is expected to further delay the opening of the three-km road that runs parallel to the MRTS network from Taramani to Velachery station.
Currently, many motorists use the shortcut to get from Taramani to Perungudi and vice versa. Work on the remaining stretch from Perungudi to Velachery, which includes construction of a “balancing culvert”, is still on.
“We hope to complete re-laying the road from Perungudi station to Velachery in the next three months,” said an official from the Southern Railway. Currently, work on three spans (the distance between two intermediate supports for a structure) is over.
“In the initial plan, only three spans were proposed. Now, Chennai Corporation wants three more connecting structures to be built. For which, we need to call for fresh tenders and this will take more time,” said the official. The work on the culvert is important as it will channelise the flow of water from the neighbouring areas.
Many residents are awaiting completing of work on the link road as it will drastically reduce the travel time for motorists. Vehicles coming from Inner Ring Road can avoid Taramani-Velachery Road. Similarly, coming from OMR and heading to Velachery can use this short cut. The link road will benefit those commuting to companies on the IT Corridor, CSIR Road at Taramani and the Inner Ring Road.
