Work on Thane and Diva lines stalled again.
Though the fifth and sixth lines between Thane and Diva have been under construction for over four years now, officials are still busy sorting out issues even as work has come to a standstill for the past few weeks.
Presently, topography of the section on which work is underway has made it difficult to lay tracks and a deviation may have to be taken. “All we can say is that we are trying to finish the work within the given deadline of December of 2017. There is no two ways about the fact that when the line is completed, it will be a big relief,” said a railway official on condition of anonymity. The lines are being built to separate suburban from outstation traffic and let both operations continue without interfering with each other. However, the project has been plagued with hurdles in the form of clearances required from the Maharashtra Forest Department for carrying out work on marshy land, axing nearly 1,700 trees, and so on.
