Kerala for developing Beypore Port

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government is drawing up a major plan for the development of Beypore port near Kozhikode. The proposal is to develop the port jointly by the State and Union governments and a private sector partner. The project details will be finalised before March 31 next year.

This was decided at a meeting of Government officials in the presence of the Ports Minister, Mr M. Vijayakumar, and the Industries Minister, Mr Elamaram Kareem, here. The Government will float a global tender to rope in a partner for the project.

The port will have the infrastructure to enable berthing of any type of vessels. The depth and the breadth of the existing channel at the port will be increased for the purpose.

The port is being developed incorporating all the modern facilities keeping in view its growth prospects. Before the project is taken up for implementation, all the required repair works at the existing port will be completed.

The Ports Department has constructed a passenger terminal at the port to cater to the passenger traffic to and from Lakshadweep. The terminal will be inaugurated on November 4.
