₹17,167-Crore Outer Harbour Terminal Project at VOC Port Gets PPPAC Nod.
The Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC) has approved the proposed outer harbour container terminal project at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port, paving the way for one of the country's largest port infrastructure developments with an estimated investment of ₹17,167 crore.
The project involves the development of a container terminal in the port's proposed outer harbour area and is expected to significantly enhance cargo-handling capacity and strengthen India's maritime logistics infrastructure.
The approval by the PPPAC marks a key milestone in the project's implementation under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The project cost has risen substantially from earlier estimates, reflecting changes in scope, infrastructure requirements and associated development works.
Located in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, VOC Port is a major gateway port on India's east coast. The proposed outer harbour development is expected to enable the port to handle larger vessels, improve operational efficiency and boost its competitiveness in container transshipment and international trade.
With the PPPAC's clearance, the project is expected to move towards the next stages of approval and bid processes, bringing the long-pending expansion plan closer to execution.
