₹3600 Crore Pune Metro Phase II Project Approved by Cabinet.
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday officially approved Phase II of the Pune Metro Rail Project, a significant expansion estimated to cost ₹3626.24 crore. This crucial development will extend metro connectivity to rapidly growing suburban areas.
The approved second phase includes two new elevated corridors: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B). Spanning a combined 12.75 kilometers, these corridors will feature 13 new stations, linking vital areas such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The entire project is slated for completion within four years.
According to Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways and Information and Broadcasting, the substantial cost of the project will be equally shared among the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies, ensuring a collaborative approach to funding this key infrastructure initiative. This expansion aims to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve public transportation for Pune's expanding populace.
