6 More Medical Colleges to Come up in State in 2 Yrs.

The state government has ambitious plans to start six new government medical colleges in the next two years, Medical Education Minister Dr Sharan Prakash Patil said.

Inaugurating the newly-built cancer unit on the premises of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and other units recently, he said the government has set up six new government medical colleges in a span of two-and-a-half years and added around 900 seats to the merit quota to the existing 1,200 seats.

In the remaining term, the government has decided to open six more colleges, he said.

With help from Centre, a super-speciality hospital would be set up in Hubballi. Former Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had given approval for this and tender has been floated.

OPEC Hospital in Raichur which was closed for one-and-a-half years during the previous BJP government has reopened now. The government is trying to run the super-speciality hospital on its own, he said. To improve the facilities at KIMS, Patil said elected representatives hold progress meetings every two or three months.
