Ahmedabad Metro Expansion Gets Cabinet Approval, ₹2,169 Crore Project to Boost Airport Connectivity.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, a 6.032-km corridor connecting Koteshwar Road to Ahmedabad Airport at a total cost of ₹2,169.04 crore.

According to an official statement, the new corridor will include five stations—four elevated and one underground. The planned stations are Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Ahmedabad Airport.

With the completion of this phase, the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 km of operational rail connectivity, further strengthening urban transport infrastructure in the region.

The project aims to significantly improve public transportation by providing seamless metro access to Ahmedabad Airport while linking key residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient transit options. It will also integrate with the existing metro network and support future infrastructure needs, including planned developments related to major sporting events such as the World Police Games 2029 and Commonwealth Games 2030.

Officials said the expansion is expected to reduce road congestion by offering a faster and more reliable alternative to private transport, improving travel times, vehicular movement, and overall road safety while enhancing accessibility across socio-economic groups.

During peak construction activity, the project is expected to generate employment for around 2,000 people, with an additional 500 jobs likely to be created during the operation and maintenance phase once the corridor becomes operational.
