Ahmedabad Metro to introduce Made-in-India trains alongside Hyundai Rotem fleet.
Ahmedabad Metro is set to introduce indigenously manufactured metro coaches from Titagarh Rail Systems’ Kolkata facility, marking a significant step towards “Make in India” initiatives in urban transport.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel flagged off the first locally produced metro train during his visit to the manufacturing unit on Saturday. According to an official release from the Gujarat government, the train will be delivered to Ahmedabad within days and, after completing final tests and certification, will be formally inducted into passenger service.
This first train is the initial delivery under a ₹350-crore contract with Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd to supply 10 metro train sets for Ahmedabad Metro. The remaining nine trains will be delivered in a phased manner over the next five to six months.
The new Titagarh trains will join the existing fleet of 32 trains supplied by South Korean firm Hyundai Rotem for Phase-1 of Ahmedabad Metro. The first Hyundai Rotem train, part of a ₹1,025-crore contract, was shipped from the company’s Changwon plant to Gujarat in December 2018.
In addition, Titagarh Rail Systems has been awarded a ₹866-crore contract to supply 24 metro trains for the under-construction Surat Metro, having been the lone bidder for that project.
