Hindalco Industries Limited, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has commissioned a greenfield Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) manufacturing plant at Belagavi, Karnataka, marking the first domestic production of this high-value specialty alumina material in India.
The facility has an initial annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes, with provisions to expand it to 60,000 tonnes in phases. The Phase 1 capacity is expected to meet almost the entire domestic requirement for PPT ATH used by the wire and cable industry, reducing import dependence and supporting the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame-retardant material used in HFFR cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. It helps limit flame spread and smoke generation while avoiding the release of harmful halogen acid gases. Growing infrastructure development, electric vehicle adoption and tighter fire-safety standards are expected to drive demand.
Hindalco said the plant was developed through an in-house technology and R&D programme, incorporating automated process controls and an integrated manufacturing ecosystem to ensure consistent quality.
A key feature is its sustainability profile. The facility operates entirely on renewable energy sourced from biomass, solar and wind, making it the world’s only specialty alumina plant operating fully on renewable power, according to the company.
The project strengthens Hindalco’s specialty alumina portfolio while creating an indigenous source of advanced flame-retardant materials for India’s electrical, infrastructure and mobility sectors.
