Amit Shah Inaugurates Gujarat’s Largest Waste-to-Energy Project in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat’s largest waste-to-energy plant, capable of processing 1,000 metric tonnes of waste daily and generating 15 megawatts (MW) of electricity per hour, was inaugurated on November 1 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Located in Piplaj, Ahmedabad, this ₹375 crore facility was established by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in partnership with Jindal Urban Waste Management Limited under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The plant uses RDF-based Martin Reverse Grate Firing Technology, where municipal solid waste is incinerated in boilers to produce 65 tonnes per hour (TPH) of steam. This steam powers turbines to generate 15 MW of electricity per hour, which is then supplied to the power grid.

As of September 30, 2024, Gujarat’s installed waste-to-energy capacity stands at 35 MW, with over 7 MW connected to the grid and the rest as off-grid projects. Across India, waste-to-energy capacity totals 600 MW, with 354 MW in off-grid projects. States with the highest installed capacities include Uttar Pradesh (114 MW), Andhra Pradesh (83 MW), Telangana (60 MW), and Maharashtra (60 MW).
