Bengal Government Plans New Data Centre Focused on AI and ML

The state government is establishing a high-capacity data centre designed to support 2,300 concurrent users running artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications, an official announced on Friday.

This new facility will enhance the practical application of data science by providing advanced infrastructure for data analysis, the official said, speaking on the sidelines of the Data Science 2024 Conference. "Our state already boasts advanced infrastructure, supporting over 5,000 users in real-time," the official added.

The new data centre, focused on AI and ML, is being built to accommodate 2,300 concurrent users. "To address capacity and growing demand, we are creating this new data centre with greater capacity. Once operational, the data load will be distributed between the two centres," the official explained.

While the primary beneficiary of this new facility will be the government, there are plans to offer startups access to the infrastructure for advanced data analytics, he noted.

For data science to be effective, robust infrastructure and essential tools and processes are required. This includes high-performance computing services, secure data centres, and comprehensive data management systems, officials from the West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Limited (Webel) highlighted.
