Blackstone Partners with Nippon Life for Private Credit Investments

Blackstone Inc. has signed an agreement to provide investment services to Nippon Life Insurance Co., marking another partnership between a global alternative asset manager and a Japanese insurer amid growing interest in private market investments.

Under a memorandum of understanding, Nippon Life, Japan’s largest life insurance company, plans to invest up to ¥1.5 trillion (about $9.4 billion) over the next five years in private credit and other credit products managed by Blackstone. The agreement also opens the possibility for Blackstone’s real estate division to oversee management of up to 12 major urban properties owned by the insurer.

The deal reflects a broader trend of global investment firms seeking opportunities in Japan’s vast insurance market. While some players, such as Athene Holding, backed by Apollo Global Management, have entered reinsurance arrangements with Japanese insurers, others, including Blackstone, are expanding through third-party asset management partnerships.

Japanese insurers are increasingly looking to diversify their portfolios and enhance returns as inflation and changing market conditions reshape the investment environment. In a similar move, Global Atlantic Financial Group, owned by KKR & Co., raised $2 billion from Japan Post Insurance in 2025 to support investments across its businesses.
