"BMRCL aims to operationalize the Bengaluru Airport metro line by 2027."

Metro rail connectivity to Kempegowda International Airport is targeted to be operationally ready by the end of 2027, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) said on Friday.

The timeline was confirmed at a forum organised by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) and New Delhi-based think tank The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The 58.19-km corridor connecting Central Silk Board Junction with the airport is being developed in two phases—Phase 2A, covering 19.75 km, and Phase 2B, spanning 38.44 km.

With the completion of the airport metro project, Bengaluru’s metro network is expected to expand to 175 km, BMRCL said in a statement. The project is part of the city’s broader push to strengthen its infrastructure and urban mobility systems.

Addressing the forum, BMRCL Advisor Abhai Kumar Rai said the corporation is moving ahead with Phase 3 of the metro network, spanning 44 km, while detailed project reports (DPRs) for Phase 3A, covering an additional 36 km, have already been prepared and are under consideration for approval. He added that studies are under way for over 200 km of new corridors to support the city’s long-term mobility requirements.

Rai also said the adoption of technologies such as regenerative braking has enabled energy savings of more than 30 per cent in BMRCL’s train operations.

At the event, BCIC and the GRIHA Council, a non-profit organisation established by TERI, signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on promoting sustainable infrastructure development in Bengaluru.
