Cabinet Clears Floating Solar PV Programme to Enhance Clean Energy Capacity.

The Union Cabinet recently approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY), a ₹5,070-crore scheme to develop floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) projects integrated with energy storage systems (ESS), as part of efforts to expand India's renewable energy capacity and grid reliability.

Under the scheme, the government aims to develop 5,000 MW of floating solar photovoltaic capacity along with co-located energy storage systems providing a minimum of two hours of storage, equivalent to 10,000 MWh.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said projects under the scheme will be sanctioned between FY2026-27 and FY2030-31, while the disbursement of financial assistance will continue through FY2032-33.

The PM-SSY seeks to promote large-scale deployment of floating solar projects equipped with energy storage, enabling better utilisation of water bodies for clean energy generation while improving the integration of renewable power into the electricity grid.
