Carnac Bridge Reaches Key Milestone with Installation of First Girder

The reconstruction of the historic Carnac Bunder bridge has reached a pivotal milestone, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) successfully positioned its first girder on the night between Saturday and Sunday. The girder, weighing 550 tonnes, was slid into place over a distance of 70 meters across the railway section, with this operation completed on October 14.

This significant work was carried out under the technical supervision of MS RITES, following plans approved by the Central Railway administration. According to a BMC release, preparations are also underway for the construction of the bridge's approach road.

Civic officials have announced that the assembly of a second girder will proceed concurrently, with plans to launch it and complete remaining works by the end of December. The overall reconstruction is slated for completion by May 2025.

The Carnac Bunder bridge is vital for traffic flow in key areas such as Masjid Bunder, CSMT, and Mohammed Ali Road. Its closure has led to a notable increase in congestion on alternative routes. Once finished, the new bridge will measure 70 meters in length and 26.5 meters in width. The original structure was demolished in 2022, and the reconstruction has experienced several delays.
