Centre receives ₹1.15 lakh crore worth of investment proposals for electronics manufacturing.

India's Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) has received an overwhelming response, attracting investment proposals of ₹1.15 lakh crore, according to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw. The total investment committed is nearly double the initial target of ₹59,350 crore, a major boost for the country's domestic electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

Announcing the figures at a press conference, Minister Vaishnaw noted the enthusiastic response from both domestic and international industry leaders. "This shows the confidence the world has in India," he said, citing the growing reputation of Indian electronics manufacturing. The scheme's application window, which was extended from May 1 to September 30, drew a total of 249 applications.

The success extends beyond investment, with other key metrics also exceeding expectations:

  • Production: Estimated production under the scheme is now ₹10.34 lakh crore, more than double the initial target of ₹4.56 lakh crore.

  • Employment: The proposals are expected to create 1.42 lakh direct jobs, significantly higher than the original target of 91,600.

  • MSME Participation: Over 60% of the applications came from Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which Vaishnaw highlighted as a "game changer for the entire economy".

The minister also revealed that for the first time, India has attracted investment proposals in advanced and critical areas like flexible PCBs, SMD passives, laminates, and capital equipment. A single unnamed company also made a record commitment of ₹22,000 crore.

The government has already begun scrutinizing the applications and will proceed with approvals on a first-come, first-served basis. The ECMS is intended to build on the success of previous schemes, with the long-term goal of establishing a $500 billion domestic electronics manufacturing ecosystem by 2030-31.
