CLPFP awaits NOC for Footwear park

Kolkata: The Calcutta Leather Products and Footwear Park (CLPFP), a SPV floated by seven Kolkata-based entrepreneurs some six months back, was yet to get the no objection certificate (NOC) from the state government for its proposed 100 acre footwear park project.

The park would be situated 2-3 kms away from Bantala Calcutta Leather Complex, said B D Bhaiya, president, CLPFP.

Speaking at a press conference organised by Indian Footwear Components Manufacturers' Association (IFCOMA), Bhaiya said, 'We have got the clearance from the industries department in West Bengal, but are yet to receive the NOC from the directorate of industries to go ahead with this Rs 400 crore project.'

Of this Rs 400 crore, Rs 40 crore would come from the central government's infrastructure development fund for the sector and the rest from internal accruals.

This would be the third park of its kind in the country after Chennai and Agra.

The park was expected to be operational by end-2009, with installed production capacity of 100,000 pairs of footwear a day. Two more parks at Chennai and Hyderabad were in the pipeline.

Bhaiya claimed the project would generate 50,000 jobs in the state, besides putting small, unorganized local manufacturers under one roof.

He said 100 companies had already applied for space inside the park.

'West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) was interested in forming a joint venture with CLPFP in developing this project,' Bhaiya claimed.

Last year, total footwear export amounted to $782 million with components segment alone contributing $204 million 'The component segment is witnessing year-on year growth of about 19 per cent, and this fiscal it is expected to grow by more than 25 per cent,' he claimed.

Indian Footwear Components Manufacturers Association (IFCOMA) will be organising its 33rd footwear exhibition from June 6 in Kolkata.

Bhaiya, also president of IFCOMA, said, 'more than 35 companies from all over India and 40 participants from the state will be at the exhibition.'
