The Chennai Metro Asset Management Ltd (CMAML), a joint venture between Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), has issued a tender for the ambitious development of the Vadapalani Depot. This significant project, estimated at ₹481 crore, aims to transform the existing site into a modern integrated bus terminal complete with a commercial complex.
The redevelopment will take place at the current Vadapalani bus depot, strategically located on Arcot Road, one of Chennai's busiest transport corridors, spanning 6.65 acres. As one of the city's top 32 busiest depots, handling over 158 buses and 1,158 daily services, the project is designed to upgrade this high-demand urban node into a world-class, multi-use facility, according to an official release.
The proposed design for the site emphasizes efficient urban planning. It provides dual access, with one entry point from the 24-meter-wide Arcot Road dedicated for terminal users, and another from the 12-meter-wide Kumaran Colony Main Road for commercial use. The entire plan prioritizes smart circulation, includes a substantial open space reservation of 2,801 square meters, and incorporates a landscaped area of 2,304 square meters, ensuring a modern and functional public space.
