CWC approves Rs 800 crore second installment for Gosikhurd project.
New Delhi: Central Water Commission (CWC) has approved Rs 800 crore second installment for Gosikhurd project. The proposal will be sent to union ministries of water resources and finance for final approval. Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) is expected to get the funds by the month-end.
VIDC had faced a major hurdle in getting the second installment due to slow pace of work. The centre had made it clear that unless it started releasing water for irrigation in 2010 winter, VIDC would not get the second installment.
The Gosikhurd project was sanctioned way back in 1988 but remained stuck due to non-availability of funds. Things started moving in 2005 when it was declared a national irrigation project and became entitled for central assistance up to 90% of the total cost while state was to bear just 10%
Centre had planned an outlay of Rs 4,500 crore in five years for this project on the condition of compliance of some formalities on part of state government. In 2009-10, Rs 1750 crore were sought from the centre of which Rs 720 crore were released.
