Delhi Gets Dairy Waste-to-Energy Boost with MCD, NDDB Collaboration.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants in Delhi for the scientific utilisation of cow dung and dairy waste.

The agreement, signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, aims to support efforts to clean the Yamuna River, improve urban sanitation, promote organic farming, generate clean energy and enhance the income of livestock farmers.

Under the initiative, livestock farmers will be paid ₹1 per kilogram for cow dung supplied to the CBG plants. The processed waste will be utilised for producing compressed biogas, while helping prevent untreated waste from entering the Yamuna.

Shah said the initiative would contribute to the government’s target of ensuring that no dirty water flows into the Yamuna by December 2028. He added that work has already begun on around 80 treatment plants in Delhi for the purification of sewage water and industrial waste.

The processing of cow dung under the project will be carried out at waste disposal facilities in Nangli, Ghoga-Goyla and Ghazipur, Shah said.

Calling the agreement a model for improving cleanliness across major cities, the Home Minister said the initiative would boost organic farming, support livestock farmers and strengthen waste management systems.

Shah said managing waste generated by around 1.25 lakh cattle in Delhi is critical to achieving the goal of preventing pollution in the Yamuna. He added that the project could serve as a template for other metropolitan cities and later benefit livestock farmers across rural India through cow dung processing.

The event was attended by Union Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Union Home Secretary and senior officials from the Centre and Delhi government.
