Detailed project report soon for flyover on Avinashi Road.

In a move to help travellers from the city reach Coimbatore airport without traffic snarls, the State Highways Department has planned a flyover on Avinashi Road at a total cost of nearly ₹ 1,000 crore.

An official of the department said that a consultant has been finalised to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and the report is expected to be ready in four or five months. The State Government has sanctioned ₹ 1.67 crore for preparing the DPR.

The plan is for a flyover from Uppilipalayam that would end further away from the SITRA junction. Avinashi Road on this stretch is already a six-lane one and has four major junctions. The plan is to have ramps to and from the flyover at these junctions. “Since ramps are to be constructed, there will be land acquisition. But, we want to minimise land acquisition,” the official said. The State Government has announced that this would be a ₹850 crore project. The exact distance, design, funds required, and ways to source finance for the project would be known only when the DPR is finalised. The actual cost might be over ₹ 1,000 crore, the official added. The flyover would be similar to the one in Gandhipuram so that those who want to go to the airport can go straight, without stopping at the signals.

The consultant is expected to sign the agreement for preparing the detailed project report early next month, the official said.
