Doubling of Guntur-Tenalirail line nearing completion.
The long-awaited doubling of Guntur-Tenali railway line is nearing completion and is set to be inaugurated by February, 2019.
The Guntur-Tenali railway line, extending up to 24 km, is a critical component of the rail link serving the Guntur-Vijayawada-Tenali region and has seen a huge increase in traffic in the recent years.
The increase in rail services in the section, diversion of several long-distance trains running between Vijayawada and Tenali to take a detour to New Guntur so as to offer connectivity to Guntur city and the gradual increase of train services in the Nadikudi-Guntur-Tenali-Vijayawada route have pushed up the traffic manifold. The freight traffic between Guntur and Chennai too has gone up enormously.
With the possibility of further increase in rail traffic on the Guntur-Tenali route, South Central Railway took up the project for doubling of the railway track between Guntur-Tenali, simultaneously undertaking electrification of this section. Works have been taken up at a cost of ₹167.34 crore and additional funds of Rs. 40 crore were allotted this year.
The doubling project involves construction of two major bridges, 40 minor bridges and the works have been completed. The track linking with Class -11 rails in mid section have also been completed. A new railway station has been constructed at Vejendla and construction of a new station building at Sangam Jagarlamudi is nearing completion with two platforms and one bridge.
