EV Momentum Builds in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.

India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem is expanding rapidly beyond its traditional urban centres, with Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana emerging as major contributors to electricity consumption by public charging stations (PCS).

Data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) show that electricity consumption by EV public charging stations across the country surged to 1,558.69 million units (MU) in FY26, more than three times the 465.85 MU recorded in FY24.

While Delhi and Maharashtra continue to account for a substantial share of electricity consumption by EV charging stations, the contribution from Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana has risen sharply in recent years, pointing to a broader geographic expansion of the country’s charging infrastructure.

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets. The state accounted for less than 1% of India’s electricity consumption by EV charging stations before FY24, but its share climbed to 5.12% in FY26.

The sharp increase highlights the growing adoption of EVs and the expansion of public charging infrastructure beyond India’s established metropolitan markets. The trend also signals the emergence of newer regional centres that could play a larger role in supporting the country’s transition to electric mobility.

The rise in charging-station power consumption comes as states increasingly expand EV infrastructure to support growing demand for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial fleets.
