Goregaon Mulund Link Road to be realigned.
In a decision that will significantly impact traffic movement, the BMC has decided to realign the proposed Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR). The new alignment will reduce the distance between Aarey Colony and Nahur from 16 km to either 6 km or 9 km based on which of the two realignment proposals are accepted. Presently, the BMC is looking to appoint a consultant for the peer review of the project, following which tenders will be floated.
The new proposal includes a tunnel across Vihar lake. The BMC also needs the nod of the Ministry of Environment and Forest as much of the tunnel falls in the area of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). The initial alignment of the road dodged Vihar lake and SGNP.
According to the new proposal, the BMC is considering either one of two tunnels. The first goes underneath Film City up to Khandipada (9 km), and the other extends from the end of Film City to Khandipada (6 km).
After suggestions from noted activists in the city, it was proposed to construct part of the road underground, to save Aarey colony. This was finally passed in the group leaders’ meeting recently.
