"Government Set to Auction Telecom Spectrum Worth ₹96,318 Crore Starting May 20th"

On Friday, the Government announced plans to auction eight spectrum bands for mobile phone services with a base price of ₹96,317.65 crore, commencing from May 20. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a notice inviting applications (NIA) for the auction of spectrum in bands ranging from 800 MHz to 26 GHz.
Among the spectrum to be auctioned are frequencies held by companies undergoing bankruptcy proceedings and those set to expire this year. The last date for seeking clarifications on NIA is slated for March 26, with the deadline for submission of applications set for April 22. The final list of bidders will be unveiled on May 9, preceding mock auctions scheduled for May 13 and 14.
The auction will be conducted through a simultaneous multiple-round ascending (SMRA) e-auction mechanism, with the assigned spectrum valid for a period of 20 years. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Communications and IT, hailed the move as a significant reform, emphasizing that telecom service providers will now have the opportunity to acquire spectrum regularly in a transparent manner.
Despite speculation that the auction process might commence post the Lok Sabha elections, no definitive clarification has been provided. The Union Cabinet had approved the auction in February, marking a pivotal step in the government's efforts to regulate the telecom sector.
